New campground and kayak launch site open
August 29, 2013 - UCLUELET - Campers, kayakers and tourism operators will benefit from a new campground and kayak launch site opening at Secret Beach today, thanks to a one-of-a-kind agreement between B.C. and Toquaht Nation.
The Secret Beach Campground has 63 new campsites and a kayak launch with 10 parking spots, and is located just south of the former Toquaht Marina and Campground Ltd.
The grand opening, and the completion of the campground's permanent structures, is expected in spring 2014.
Below is a history of closure information:
August 14, 2013 – This is a reminder that the Toquaht Bay marina, campground & boat launch remain closed. There is no camping available, and the boat launch & marina remain closed indefinitely. However, a temporary kayak launch site is available for kayakers & kayak parking only. The temporary kayak launch site is located near the community of Macoah, about a 10 minute drive away from the Toquaht Marina & Campground Ltd. that is closed.
To find the temporary kayak launch site from Highway 4, follow the Toquaht Bay/Maggie Lake Forest Service road for about 12 kilometres (as if you are driving to the Toquaht Marina and Campground Ltd., which is closed). Then, follow the signs that direct you towards the temporary kayak launch site. Fees are: $10/day for parking, and $20/person to launch. For a map of the location click below.

May 13, 2013: A new temporary kayak launch site to access Toquaht Bay & the Broken Group Islands will be available near the Toquaht Nation’s community of Macoah effective May 15, 2013. The Toquaht Marina and Campground Ltd. is making this site available to kayakers only, as there are no camping facilities at this temporary location. Parking fees are $10 per vehicle per day, and kayak launch fees are $20 per person. These fees will be used to provide improved services at a replacement campground that the Toquaht Nation is building that will open this summer. Once an opening date is confirmed, it will be announced here. The Toquaht marina, campground and boat launch remain closed pending the results of environmental testing, and pending the Vancouver Island Health Authority Medical Health Officer’s approval to re-open the area. Preliminary results are expected later this month, after which the extent of required remediation will be known.
March 21, 2013: Ucluelet beaches are not affected by this closure, and in the interim boaters can use the public boat launch in Ucluelet. Recent testing in the area found arsenic, selenium and cobalt at levels that exceed the commercial and park lands standards laid out in B.C.’s Contaminated Sites Regulation. The Province and the Toquaht Marina and Campground Ltd., with support from the Vancouver Island Health Authority medical health officer, are temporarily closing the marina, campground, boat launch & road access to the site until the Province has conducted further studies, the potential risks to human health are better understood, and the Vancouver Island Health Authority medical health officer deems that the area is safe to re-open. Additional study is expected to take at least eight weeks, after which the extent of required remediation will be known. Please see the Bulletin and FAQ document that is posted above for further information about the closure, the metals that were found in the area, and considerations about the potential risks to human health.
